Knowledge about treatment for acne removal has come a long way over the last 15 years. Many scientific studies have disproved the theory that it's what you eat that causes the zits spots and pimples. They suggest the more important factor is probably that it is hereditary.

Accutane is a controversial drug of choice for acne removal, but once it's done its initial job of clearing your spots and blemishes. Retin-A which is a topical derivative of Accutane, can be used to keep complexions nice and clear.

Other acne removal treatments include

• Collagen injections. Collagen is injected under the skin to replace the body's natural collagen that has been lost through the acne scarring. Collagen is very effective in the use of wrinkles and fine lines etc.

• Chemical peels are also a useful acne removal tool. This procedure involves removing the top layer of skin and is very effective in the removal of superficial scarring caused by acne. The skin is left quite sore after the initial treatment, but it soon regenerates and improves its appearance.

• Punch Grafting is another procedure used for acne removal. A hole is literally punched into the skin and the scar is removed. New skin is then applied to the area which is usually taken from behind the earlobe. Punch Grafting can be a useful treatment for deep acne scars

• Autologous fat transfer is an acne removal procedure which takes fat from another area of the body and injects it into the skin under the scar. It's a very efficient method for raising depressed scars and making them less noticeable. However the results are not permanent and the procedure usually needs to be repeated every few months.

• Laser resurfacing uses a high energy laser light to burn away acne scarred skin. It can be an uncomfortable procedure, but there have been some reports of success.

• Dermabrasion is used as an acne removal tool to minimise small scars and blemishes. Dermabrasion removes the top layer of skin. It can be a slightly painful procedure, but once the healing process begins the surface of the skin should look much cleaner and fresher.
